Mullaitivu Water Filtration Project

The Need

Five schools in the Mullaitivu District have requested the installation of an onsite water filtration system in order to provide clean drinking water for their students, and also help reduce the incidence of kidney-related diseases in the area. The five schools are:

  • Vannivilankulam GTMS with classes from Grade 1 to Grade 11 (GCE O/L) benefitting 300 students and 25 staff

  • Aninchiyankulam GTMS with classes from Grade 1 to Grade 5 benefitting 330 students and 25 staff

  • Kalvilankulam (Thunukkai) Mada Vidyalayam with Grade 1 to Grade 11 (GCE O/L) classes benefitting 175 students and 20 staff

  • Yogapuram Maha Vidyalayam with classes from Grade 6 to Grade 13 (GCE A/L) benefitting 525 students and 40 staff

  • Koddaikaddiyakulam Maha Vidyalayam with classes from Grade 1 to Grade 13 (GCE A/L) benefitting 240 students and 30 staff

The Solution

A water filtration system has recently been installed at Vannivilankulam GTMS, Mullaitivu District. The total cost was approximately $2,500 Cdn dollars. Please help us support the installation of water filtration systems at the remaining 4 schools in this district for a total remaining cost of $10,000 Cdn dollars.

Project Impact

Direct Impact

This project directly benefits over 1,700 individuals in Mullaitivu District with safe drinking water.

Sustainable Development

SDG6 Clean Water and Sanitation

This project helps us achieve United Nation’s sustainable development goal SDG6 - Clean Drinking Water.. This project also helps us achieve the specific development targets:

6.1 By 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all

Indirect Impact

Water availability is becoming less predictable in many places. In some regions, droughts are exacerbating water scarcity and thereby negatively impacting people’s health and productivity and threatening sustainable development and biodiversity.

Ensuring that everyone has access to sustainable water and sanitation services is a critical climate change mitigation strategy for the years ahead.
