Toronto Raises $75K for Immediate IDP Relief E-mail
Saturday, 18 April 2009 14:03

Last weekend IMHO Canada held an impressive telethon fundraiser event at the Atlanta Party Hall in Scarborough to raise much needed funds for the emergency relief effort in the Northeast. As the medical and health needs have been compacted by a scarcity of food, which has led to a myriad of illnesses affecting children and others, the need for milk powder and other life-saving nutrition has become apparent. This event raised approximately $75,000 for the next shipment of milk powder to be sent to the conflict zones through our local partners on the ground who were cleared to send another shipment. The event was televised and promoted on the radio by TVI, CMR, and CTR. Various speakers touched on the current crisis and the massive humanitarian needs now plaguing those affected. Special thanks to all who attended, all the committed volunteers and organizers, and all our media partners who made this telethon a reality!

Life-Saving Milk Powder Delivered Inside Conflict Zone E-mail
Monday, 06 April 2009 11:33

After many weeks of hard work, IMHO USA & IMHO Canada were finally able to collectively send US$50,000 worth of milk products to the people inside the conflict zone--the first group to be able to do so! These much needed food supplies were transported by the ship “City of Dublin”. The vessel carried a composition of mixed food commodities weighing over 1,029 metric tons, in addition to urgently required medical items, emergency health kits and shelter kits. Delivery of Milk Powder 2

Once again, we were able to accomplish this thanks to our partners at the ground level who made this a reality. This is the first time that any agency was able to deliver milk products inside the conflict zone since the beginning of the current crisis.

Delivery of Milk Powder 1As you may be aware, many children have died due to severe malnutrition as well as from blast injuries. In addition, young mothers have died too due to the current conflict that has resulted in many children not being able to receive breast milk, the only source of energy for them. Thanks to the generous contribution from you we were able to deliver this life-saving milk powder to those children in dire need. In addition, other agencies were able to send food and basic medicines in the same shipment. We will continue to keep you posted of the progress at the ground. Thank you!

Fundraiser for Refugees E-mail

IMHO Canada held an awareness and fundraising event at the Riviera Parque Banquet & Convention Centre in Concord, Ontario, Canada on Friday, October 10, 2008. The event was a success with hundreds in attendance, who enjoyed dinner and a creative performance of fusion dance. Video footage capturing the tragic tales of suffering from the ongoing crisis were shown, capturing the attention and sympathy of all attendees. The original purpose of the event was to raise funds for the establishment of a comprehensive cardiac unit at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. However, due to an unexpected turn of events in the Vanni area, a part of the collected funds were disbursed to attend emergency medical needs of the internally displaced people. This included hiring additional medical and support staff and providing medical supplies to hospitals which had been serving the affected people of the area. Incredibly, the event raised approximately $100,000!

Canada Youth Culture Show Raises $7500 to Support Students E-mail
Wednesday, 18 February 2009 01:33

The IMHO Canada Youth Committee held its first ever event and fundraiser this past January 23rd at the Armenian Youth Centre of Toronto. The event, “Breaking Barriers”, was an evening of live music and dance by talented youth. What is most impressive is that the show was all about youth: it was planned by youth, featured youth performers, and benefited youth in Sri Lanka. It was a terrific first effort that not only helped spread the word about IMHO Canada, but also raised some much needed funds during this difficult time. Due to the recent escalation of war in the Northeast of Sri Lanka, which has displaced hundreds of thousands, a number of medical students from Jaffna have lost contact with their families. As such, they have no means of financial support at present. In total, 37 such individuals have been recently identified, and the IMHO Canada Youth Committee has decided to support them during their time of need. The donation is being facilitated by the local medical alumni association and is due to be sent shortly. IMHO Canada is prepared to support these students for at least one year.
