Nutrition Program for Special Needs Children

The Need

In Kilinochchi District there are 24 special needs units within the regular school system, with approximately 200 special needs children in these units.

Our partner organization on the ground, SJC87 Initiative, is working with the school and the students to provide autism programming. The families of the students are not always able to provide nutritious meals for their children due to poverty or other challenges.

The Solution

Our current project aims to provide nutritious meals for the special needs children approximately 3 times a week to ensure they are receiving proper nutrition. This helps the students avoid hunger and also helps them stay energized and learning.

The cost is approximately Rs.70 per meal per student. We have estimated the cost for 2 meals per week for 200 children to run about Cdn $6,000 for the year; and 3 meals per week for 200 children will run about Cdn $9,000 for the year.
