IMHO Canada is supporting the ongoing operations of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital Diabetic Centre in Northern Sri Lanka. This diabetic center was established in July 2009 and has one medical officer and three pre-interns who provide an initial assessment and full diabetic screening (including for retinopathy and peripheral neuropathy) for patients. The center has a focus on education, with each patient receiving an hour of individualized diabetes education. Follow-up care is arranged through the patient's primary care physician. The center saw 1,425 patients in 2009, and over 14,500 patients in 2010. The diabetic awareness program implemented by the center has been extremely successful in educating the public and getting treatment to those who need it. Diabetes remains one of the top medical needs amongst Sri Lankans. Through support for this center and providing medical care to those in need, IMHO Canada hopes to support the overall health of patients in need throughout the Northern Province.

The following are some of the achievements of the centre over the course of its existence over the last three years:

1. Conducted diabetes continuous medical education program for doctors – 253 doctors participated.
2. Released four health education CDs, including “Thiyanam”, “Nimmathi Noki”, “Neerilivai Vetti Kolvom 2010” and “Arokiyamaka Valnthidu”.
