Efforts

Cardiac care outside of major cities is often poor and underdeveloped. The same is true for much of Sri Lanka, especially the north and east. For this reason, IMHO Canada contributed significant funds to purchase equipment for the development of a High Dependency Unit at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. IMHO also brought much needed attention to the need for a cardiac catheterization lab in Northeast Sri Lanka, which opened in February 2010, thanks to a collaborative effort between IMHO, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), and the UN Development Program (UNDP). This newly established Heart Treatment Complex will be essentially for directly serving the cardiac needs of 500,000 persons in the area and indirectly serving millions throughout the Northeast. The Canadian Ambassador was on-hand to open the new center.

Video on Cardiac Needs

This English-language video entitled "Hope in the Horizon" was produced in September 2008 and describes the need for a cardiac facility at Jaffna Teaching Hospital. IMHO Canada, along with IMHO USA, brought much needed attention to the need for a cardiac catheterization lab in Jaffna, helping to bring the project to the attention of several other international non-governmental organizations. One such group has since come forward and agreed to fund the construction of this critically important facility.
