EffortsFor patients with acute psychiatric problems, temporary hospitalization and intensive rehabilitation in an inpatient setting can be an important first step to resuming a normal daily routine and being incorporated back into the family. The overarching goal with every mental health effort is to help those struggling with mental illness or disability to learn to live independently. Getting patients access to the latest medications with the least amount of side effects is also key. Following the conclusion of Sri Lanka's civil conflict, special emphasis has been given towards addressing the massive mental health needs of the people affected by war. More generally, there is much work to be done in building mental health care throughout the island. IMHO Canada has supported such varied projects as a multi-disciplinary intervention team, mobile mental health clinics, transportation for patients and volunteer counselors, and other general support for mental health service providers.
